The hypnotic state of mind is one of four states of the brain. The brain experiences the following states -- Full Conscious Awareness, Hypnotic State, Dream State and Sleep State. In the hypnotic state your brain is open to suggestion and can be guided in a way that it cannot when you are in any of the other three states.
Hypnotherapy is quickly becoming a mainstream form of psychotherapy. As the workings of the human brain are understood, so is the practice of hypnotherapy. In your grandparents or parents youth hypnosis was most likely considered nothing more than a silly magic act. Today doctors and scientists are recognizing the validity of this form of treatment and people are achieving real results when seeking hypnosis for many purposes such as stress and anxiety management.
When you decide to try stress management with hypnotherapy, it is important to keep an open mind and stay positive. Even if you don't see results right away, you should stick with it as it often takes several sessions to notice a difference. You may want to combine hypnotherapy with other stress relieving techniques like traditional counseling, meditation, exercise and journaling to achieve the best results.
