What Stress Management Research Reveals
|
Recent medical and scientific research has shed some light on the problem of stress. Stress management research confirms that stress has a measurable effect on the body. A large percentage (as high as 80 percent) of diseases and disorders can be directly attributed to the damaging effects of stress. Stress can damage your immune system because of an interaction between naturally occurring chemicals. When the body is stressed, the sympathetic nervous system kicks into high gear and the cellular protection factor plummets. Basically this means when you're stressed, your immune system isn't functioning at its most efficient.
Everyone experiences a certain level of stress, which is defined as emotional, mental and/or physical strain, or a situation that causes such a strain. This is inevitable if you live on planet Earth. As you go about your everyday life, you encounter stress in many different forms. However, what is stressful for one person and what is stressful for another can vary a great deal. The first step in managing your stress is to pinpoint the reasons or situations that you feel are stressful. If you don't know, you can figure it out by recognizing bodily symptoms at certain times.
For example, if you notice that your stomach flutters or your jaw clenches when you are stuck in traffic, this could be defined as a stressful situation. Maybe you feel tension when everything is noisy. Some people get stressed when they are surrounded by disorder. There may be a certain external situation that is causing you stress. Once you recognize your stressors and how you react to them you can implement strategies like self-talk and deep breathing to get you through tough times. You can also take appropriate action to reduce or eliminate the stressor if possible.
Another thing that has been revealed by stress management research are some easy ways to combat stress and invoke favorable reactions in the body. Hugging a loved one and petting your cat or dog are examples. Exercise is another example, as is getting enough sunshine. These things release good chemicals in your body which can help cancel out the bad ones produced by stress. Even what you eat can help your body resist the effects of damaging stress. The more we learn about this invisible yet very real malady, the better equipped we are to manage it effectively.
