Stress Management in Information Technology

The career field of information technology is a thriving one. However if you are preparing for a career in this field or already have one, you should learn as much as you can about stress management in information technology. You may even want to take a course on stress management as this is a very important tool to have in any career field, especially one like information technology. One of the most common mental maladies suffered by workers in this field is information overload.

You may have experienced this already. If you are constantly on the computer you may become burnt out. It is important to take sufficient breaks during which time you interact with the natural world. For example, if you have a 15 minute break during your workday spend it outside in the sunshine, chatting with a co-worker about something other than work. Or, take a short walk. The activity combined with the sunlight will do wonders for your stress level. Another way to prevent information overload is to avoid email addiction.

Email addiction may be a problem for you if you find yourself checking your email every few minutes. If you feel like you are constantly reading and sending email rather than focusing on more important tasks, it may be time to set some boundaries. The easiest way to do this is to assign certain times when you are allowed to deal with email. Depending on your particular needs this could be once per day or several times per day. The frequency and time spent should be tailored to best fit your job and your schedule. For example, you may want to check your email first thing in the morning, once in the mid-afternoon and once before you leave work for the day. This will ensure you get pressing emails taken care of without spending an excessive amount of time.

Another part of stress management in information technology is learning how to let go of workday worries before interacting with your family at home. Many people take time during their commute to unwind by listening to soothing music, while others need a relaxation period when they first get home. It's recommended that you take 15 minutes to center yourself and release the work related stress before focusing all your attention on your home life. This will help you reduce stress both at home and at work, which is always a good thing!
