Stress Management for Anxiety Disorders
|
Do you have an anxiety disorder? The two most common types of anxiety disorders are Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD as it's known, is characterized by chronic long-lasting anxiety that is general in nature and stays at a fairly consistent level. Panic Disorder is characterized by panic attacks which do come and go. People with GAD can also have Panic Disorder. Stress management for anxiety disorders can be used in conjunction with traditional treatment for better results.
For example, a person with an anxiety disorder may already be recieving medication from their doctor and even psychotherapy from a counselor. However they may find a higher level of relief from anxiety by implementing strategies into their everyday life. Deep breathing is one strategy that can be used to elicit the relaxation response and reduce the level of panic a person is feeling. When doing deep breathing, your full attention should be brought to the exercise and you should take belly breaths as opposed to shallow chest breaths.
Another tactic for anxiety sufferers is self talk. When you feel panic starting to come on, acknowledge and challenge it. Admit you are feeling panicked, and state the reason why. Then, think about alternatives to panic. What action could you take to remedy the situation that is causing you panic? If there is an action you can take, consider taking it. If there is not, you must let go of your anxiety using healthy distractions or deep breathing. Exercise and meditation are examples of ways you can let go of anxiety. Both of these activities promote favorable states of mind. Your brain actually releases chemicals which make you feel calmer and happier when you exercise and/or meditate.
Stress management for anxiety disorders is a crucial skill for patients to learn because dealing with anxiety is a daily battle. The more effective one becomes at managing stress, the less anxiety they are likely to feel. There are many techniques that can be taught by qualified professionals or even in books. Individuals with anxiety disorders who have questions about effective stress management should consult their physician, psychiatrist or psychologist for assistance. While you can certainly use simple techniques like deep breathing on your own, it is important to notify your medical professional if you think stress is a problem for you, especially if you've been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
