Positive Strategies for Managing Stress
|
There are many positive strategies for managing stress that you can implement today. Stress is an unavoidable part of life. Everyone experiences some level of stress. Of course, what is stressful to you may be completely different from what is stressful to your neighbor. Just as we all have different stressors, we have different reactions to those stressors. Some people turn to food or alcohol for comfort, while others become angry or irritable. The body reacts in a negative way to chronic stress and your immune system is compromised. As you can see, stress management is very important.
Some of the most effective ways of managing stress are also the easiest. First, set reasonable goals for yourself at home and at work. If you are constantly striving for goals that are unattainable you will feel stressed. Another helpful tip is to ask for help when you need it. Many people take on too much and are too anxious or proud to ask for help. Learning to delegate to others when you can is another helpful skill that can help you lower your stress level. Then, of course, there are ways you can directly release those feel-good chemicals in your body which boost your immunity and fight stress.
Getting enough exercise and sunlight are great stress-fighters. Eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated can also help you avoid the negative effects of stress in your life. You may have heard that pet owners can deal with stress better than people who don't have pets. This is because the act of stroking a dog or cat can release good chemicals and lower your stress. So can hugging, cuddling or holding hands with a loved one. Gettng absorbed in a favorite activity can also go a long way towards fighting off the negative effects of daily stress. Helping others and performing altruistic deeds can also lower your stress level.
If you are having trouble using positive strategies for managing stress, you may need to seek professional help. A psychologist or psychiatrist can help you effectively confront and manage your stress. They can work with you during each session as well as send you home with tools and resources you can use at home. Cognitive behavior therapy is especially helpful for teaching practical methods of dealing with stress.
