The Importance of Business Stress Management

The workplace is a big source of stress for many people. It is important to understand business stress management in order to avoid the detrimental effects of stress on the mind and the body. Stress management at work can be practiced by everyone from the CEO of the company to the workers in the mailroom. The simple strategies outlined in this article can not only help each individual employee reduce stress and function to their best potential but also help the company as a whole function more efficiently. When employees are less stressed they are more productive, which helps everyone.
One strategy for managing stress at work is to take mini-breaks. Sit at your desk and close your eyes. Focus on your breathing. Take a deep breath, hold for a few moments, then exhale slowly. Inhaling for a count of four, holding for a count of four and exhaling for a count of eight is an effective breathing exercise. Breathe through your nose and push the breath to your belly. This allows more oxygen to enter. A few deep, controlled breaths can go a long way towards reducing your stress level. Many people like to repeat a mantra in their mind with each breath, such as 'Calm down' or 'Relax'
Another part of stress management at work is managing your time effectively. If you find yourself wasting time on needless activities like constantly checking email, this may be contributing to your stress. Mindfully focus your attention on the task at hand until it is finished. Some experts recommend taking care of the least desirable task first, and focusing on nothing else until it is done. This way the rest of the day will be a breeze and you will sail through it with a sense of accomplishment.
There are also many professional workshops that teach business stress management. If you are in corporate management you may want to plan a retreat or seminar for your team. Many of these workshops teach not only stress reduction but assertiveness and teamwork. All of these skills work together when it comes to functioning as an effective employee and an effective individual in general. You will find some of these workshops last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. There are also study programs you can do at your work site.
