Crises intervention stress management is a very valuable tool. There are various methods of crisis intervention which apply to many different situations. A crisis is defined as an unstable situation filled with danger and/or difficulty. This situation is often an important turning point, for example in a medical setting the turning point may be recovery or death. Examples of crises would be things like natural disasters, life-threatening illness or injury, death of an immediate family member, even the loss of a job. Often it is crucial for an intervention to take place in order to divert the crisis or provide help following the crisis.
One part of crisis intervention may be providing practical help to the afflicted party. Practical help may include food, lodging, security or other basic needs. While this is very important one cannot forget about the importance of stress management. Stress management is crucial for those experiencing the crisis as well as those offering help and intervention. Individuals who do not receive stress management are prone to developing chronic negative effects such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD which persists long after the crisis has ended. With proper psychotherapy stress can be managed and this disorder may be avoided.
Effective stress management may utilize a combination of different therapies and techniques. One part of stress management is talking about the crisis event as well as the feelings connected to the event. Often people are unaware of their true feelings or how strong those feelings are until they discuss the event with a therapist. Once the feelings are out in the open they can be acknowledged and dealt with accordingly. The therapist may teach the client ways to deal with anxiety as it arises, such as with controlled breathing or self-talk.
